My old computers

Here I'll provide a chronological list of the computers I build from parts I collect at the local dumps, and used parts from friends who would throw them away if I didn't.

Kerstin

Kerstin was the very first computer I aquired, that I actually went through with installing Linux on. She was never in use as a server, but spent most of her productive time as a media player, running Windows XP. When I started playing with Linux, she became the test subject. She was a small Fujitsu Siemens with just one dedicated HDD space (which I modified slightly to be able to fit in 2 HDDs), and a net unit supplying 80 watts of power. The net unit could not support both a USB controller, a Creative Audigy 2 sound card, and two hard drives. The motherboard and CPU is now out of service, as new hardware has taken over. The CPU was an intel Pentium III, running at 994 MHz.

Except for the motherboard and CPU, she went through a lot of other hardware during her lifetime, mostly different IDE hard drives. She also went through a long list of operating systems, due to her status as test machine. Here's a non-exhausting list of operating systems successfully run on kerstin:

  • Arch Linux
  • Debian 5 "Lenny"
  • Debian 6 "Etch"
  • Lubuntu 10.04
  • WattOS
  • Windows XP Professional

I sent Kerstin back to the dump during the first quarter of 2012, as I had lots of new motherboards incoming with more potent CPUs. When I look back at it, that might have been a bad desicion, as she would have been a perfect torrent server. New machines have taken her place, but I saved the chassie and net unit, for the occasion I run into a small ATX motherboard that fits in the chassie.
